Years of Neighborhood Progress
1. Virginia Ave Park - We motivated
the City and others to add four land additions to
Virginia Ave Park. Interim improvements to the Pico
Blvd frontage has made the land accessible to the
public. These purchases represent the largest SM park
expansion in 15 years. Ground breaking for the improvements
is planned for Fall 2002.
2.
Pico/Cloverfield Farmers Market - Our persistence
helped establish the Pico/Cloverfield Farmers Market.
The fourth largest grossing CFA in Southern California.
It has our continued support.
3. Food Markets - The fulfillment of a major
long time community goal of a full service supermarket
located in the neighborhood came when the Ralph's
Mkt on Olympic & Cloverfield opened. Our active participation
supported the process from zoning changes to law suits.
Trader Joe's on Pico Blvd came soon after and has
been a great addition to our neighborhood serving
businesses.
4.
Park Staffing - Our community requested staffing
and programming at Virginia Ave Park. Staffing is
now full time and programs cover a wide range of ages
and needs, youth and seniors in particular.
5. Police Athletic League - We supported the
establishment of the PAL building, now located on
Olympic & 14th St.
6. Pico Streetscape - The $7 million Pico Streetscape
plan is a mile stone for the street. This was a cooperative
effort of the City , the Chamber of Commerce, the
Pico Blvd sub-committee of the Chamber of Commerce
, Friends of Sunset Park, SPAN, Virginia Park Advisory
Board and PNA.
7. Police Presence - After our neighborhood
surveys emphasized safety concerns and numerous community
meetings were held, the requested neighborhood police
presence has been increased in the form of Beat 8,
bike patrols, and an office at Virginia Ave Park.
Crime Statistics are dramatically down.
8.
Responsible Retailers - We lead successful
opposition to permitting carry out liquor sales at
the 99 cent Store and 76 Service Station.
9.
Affordable Housing - We have an active commitment
to affordable housing that emphasizes citywide distribution
of mixed income projects for elderly, singles, families
and the disabled in both ownership and rental properties.
10.
Mt. View - We continue to actively support
of the conversion of the Mt. View Mobile Home Park
to ownership.
11.
Traffic & Street Improvements - Responding
to neighborhood concerns, traffic control measures
and permit parking were requested and implemented
in various parts of the neighborhood. Street lights
were upgraded and some alley lights were installed.
