Board of Directors Minutes of 8/9/01
Present: Peter T, Don G, Joseph B, George G, Mathew M, Tarik R, Clyde S, Joe W, Tara Z

Called to order 7:15pm
#2 Minutes approved. Carl Schwartz law office on Pico added to #7
#3 No financial report. Cultures in the Park yielded 5 new memberships. Web site stats not available due to server glitch. 7 or 8 new articles were added over the past few weeks.
#4 Four board members will get letters to clarify membership intentions due to absences and stated pending resignations.
#5 Thanks to Joe Weichman, 24 Security lights have been added to the items we can offer in our beautification and anti graffiti program. A list of 15 often defaced properties has been complied. Attempts to contact the property owners will be undertaken by Matt, Tarik and Peter and inform them of our program in the hopes they will take advantage of our offer. Gardener Cleo Essom has agreed to provide any preparation, services, materials and plants needed for "green" mitigation at $20 per plant.
The clean up day scheduled for late Sept will be co-sponsored by PNA and City Maintenance. m/s/p - Matt/Joe - Yes/Unan
#6 Clyde and Peter will craft a response to the Virginia Ave Park Expansion EIR. m/s/p - Tarik/Clyde - Yes/Unan
#7 Stan Shu presented a proposed 900 sq ft addition to 1301 Pico. A vote of support was taken m/s/p - Clyde/Joe - Yes/Unan
PNA members Carl and Eileen Schwartz wish to relocate their law office on Pico. City staff is reluctant to allow an office in retail space. A vote of support of the Schwartzes was taken m/s/p - Clyde /Joe - Unan
#8 Peter has been unable to get a response form City staff regarding 20th improvements. Clyde will try.
#9 Outside committees
Neighborhood Council - All motions pass
CCSM - George to take our message of our desire for a senior, ownership or disabled project for the Kesler property.
PIO - SBA at a new airport office is to administer the group
Pico Blvd - no report
Civic Cntr - no report
SM Conservancy - no report
Formation of a new outside committee report - SM College. Joe will be the contact.
#10 a) Letters went to the Plan Com re: Co-Op and to the City Forester re: tree at 18th & Mich
b) Meetings re: College theater plans for Madison Sch are underway, next is 9/19
c) Phone calls to IRS indicate 501c3's can take positions on legislation and engage in
limited activity, item to be agendized along with SMRPH & VERITAS
d) flu shot sponsorship a possibility. Strong opposition stated and verbal information provided

No progress on program. Kim Braun of the City Maintenance program presented an outline of the Graffiti Removal Event set for Oct 20 which is co-sponsored by PNA

a)After heated discussion and three motions, a motion to sponsor a Flu Shot Clinic with Vaccination Solutions of San Diego at Pico Farmer's Mkt in Oct passed m/s/p 5 yes/3 no/ 1abstention
b) Don Gray presented a resolution to send to Council that expresses our support of programs that promote dental hygiene and decay prevention in place of City water fluoridation Passes unan

park, community garden, or historical bldg move-on for cultural, art or museum use

The PNA Announces it's 2nd Annual Scholarship Essay contest. Through hard work, community support, and accessibility to resources we believe that all children can accomplish goals and continue on to higher education.

The PNA will reward one graduating high school senior $500 for the furtherance of their studies. more


Pico Neighborhood Association is working to improve your mobility within Santa Monica. The City of Santa Monica’s “Know Before You Go” program provides weekly updates of City and permitted utility projects within the City’s streets, sidewalks, parks, and other public space that are expected to impact the public for more than one day.
