A
dozen years, four land additions and four design processes
have transpired since the decision to expand Virginia Park
was made. The plan described in the image above is the current
plan. An environmental impact report (EIR) is now published,
more design work is being done and a schedule is evolving.
The plan will be before the City Council in January 2002

PARK
KIDS PRODUCE TV SPOT

The
youth of Virginia Avenue Park produced, wrote, directed
and acted in their own Public Service Announcement promoting
the Park.
An
ensemble of industry professionals from film and video production
including: Alex Munoz (Producer / Director) , Nina Kleiner
(producer), Cathy Weiss (producer / director) , and John
Kick (Cinematographer), worked together to give the kids
the oppotunity to create their own thirty second spot which
they hope will be aired on Public Televsion.
Held
on consecutive Fridays, the first session was spent developing
and writing the PSA script, which the student shot during
the second session. "I am very impressed with the kids",
says Munoz " Not only did they do a good job directing the
spot, they finished ahead of schedule! Which usually doesn't
happen with a professional crew!".
Munoz
and Dawn Beale, director of the park's Thelma Terry Center
said they view the two day project as a springboard to a
larger program introducing youngsters to the art of making
videos. Beale said she hopes to get the equipment necessary
so that Munoz can offer a four week course in video filmmaking
next year.
Equipment,
and post production services were donated by Rich/Es productions
of Beverly Hills.
A
special screening of the PSA will be held on November 16,
at 7:00PM at the Thelma Terry Center in the park.

I
always get a warm feeling when I go to Virginia Park in
the heart of the Pico neighborhood. I enjoy the chit-chat
at lunch with the senior lunch program. There is always
a chance for a friendly exchange & some memories of the"good
old days."
There is the gang at the employment office, who always give
me some friendly encouragement as I peruse the "job board"
in search of my dream career. They are very helpful in updating
my resume on one of the office computers and the neighborhood
park parties are fun, too... good food & fellowship. I'll
be back.
