Googie
in PN
Last
month a developer came before the PNA with a plan for
the corner of 14th St and Pico Blvd. That site is currently
an auto repair facility, before that it was a gas station.
The site has a gas pump island cover component designed
in the Googie style, a bold futuristic commercial fashion
prevalent in the late 1950's and early 1960's. This particular
cantilever design, like 14th Street, is often cited as
an example of how Googie style found it's way into gas
station construction.

It
appears the island cover can be dismantled and moved.
The developer has offered the item to us, or the city,
should his project move forward.
We
feel the island cover has enough sculptural value and
transferable function as to make a great shade arbor at
the beach or a park. The Virginia Ave Park Expansion Plan
calls for just such a structure. Skate Park, which is
coming to Memorial Park or Airport Park are also good
candidates.
PNA
has approached the Landmarks Commission for help with
this project.
